James Tan is widely regarded as one of the most sought-after printmakers in Singapore. His encyclopedic knowledge of digital printmaking is evident at first glance into his working sanctum, which is littered with print paper of various textures and sizes specially purchased from all over the world.
James’s journey started in 1994 when his father gave him an Epson Stylus Pro printer, starting James on the path to his calling. He cut his teeth as a digital imaging artist and developed a passion for photography, particularly in the exact world of Architecture. Working as an apprentice with a respected commercial photographer, James furthered his knowledge and within three years was regarded as a full-fledged photographer by his mentor. Soon after, he achieved a double promotion to the rank of Associate in the Master Photographers Association, an exclusive professionals-only association based in the UK.
Nevertheless, James’s first love and talent lies in the rarefied realm of fine art printing. From toying with his dad’s entry-level machine, he is now Singapore’s first operator of Epson’s largest fine art printer, capable of producing highly detailed prints measuring over 5×10 feet. James is also the first and only Fellow-ranked Digital Print Maker in the MPA – a special category created in recognition of his abilities.
In 2011, James was invited to be the first and only Asian judge at the prestigious MPA photo competition in the UK. He has since been a regular face in the MPA qualifications grading and judging scene.
To this day, the works of many renowned photographers and photography exhibitions have passed James’s discerning eye and have been brought to life with his prints.
