James Tan began his photography career as an apprentice in a commercial photography studio, and quickly rose through the ranks to become a full-fledged commercial photographer. He received a double promotion to become an Associate of the Master Photographers Association (MPA) in Architectural photography in 2007.

In 2009, James was awarded MPA’s Fellowship rank as its first and only Certified Printmaker – a special honour created in recognition of his contribution and mastery in the craft.
